Overcoming Thresholds
In the classic template of widely acclaimed myth and fairy tales the plot and story follow a journey-threshold formula. Classic to tales since Homer's Illiad the whole quest begins with a simple calling. The hero is challenged by a devastating loss and a problem that calls them on a journey. On the journey the hero is obstructed by an antagonist called the Gaurdian. The Gaurdian sits on the threshold which the hero overcomes and begins a transformation. Three weaknesses that prevents the hero from reaching the threshold is an ego centric attitude, pride, and hubris. Once the hero surpasses the threshold the return is set up, which concludes the story.
Two thresholds that I have overcome and surpassed are college related. The first threshold was simply changing my life to have a love of knowledge when before I had a love for only creativity and talent. Before starting at SLCC it almost seemed impossible or pointless to go and there were barriers. I got financial aid and became comfortable in this learning environment. Once I could afford tuition I had more time to study and plan.
The second threshold I passed by making friends with a lot of people. When I came to Utah I found it very difficult to make any friends or feel natural in any social situation. At SLCC I've found it very easy to make new friends. Before I could hardly ever find a good excuse to start talking to people I had never met.
Two thresholds I'm still waiting to surpass are: 1. finding a career where I can earn money doing what I love and 2. getting married, after meeting someone and falling in love.
